For the past six years, I’ve been immersed in the world of databases as the IT Manager for the Database Team at ODOT. My focus was on team building, mentoring, ensuring data integrity, optimizing performance, and providing reliable data services. However, a year ago, I embarked on a new, exhilarating journey: leading our agency’s foray into the transformative realm of Artificial Intelligence.

This past year has been a whirlwind of learning, innovation, and collaboration. It’s been a privilege to play a pivotal role in shaping how ODOT embraces and leverages AI technologies.

Here’s a glimpse into the key initiatives and accomplishments that defined my tenure as AI Lead:

Laying the Foundation: Policy and Governance

Recognizing the importance of a structured and ethical approach to AI, I collaborated closely with our CIO to develop a comprehensive AI policy. This policy provides a framework for responsible AI adoption, ensuring alignment with our agency’s values and legal requirements.

To streamline the process of evaluating and approving AI initiatives, we launched the AI Use Case Submission Portal. This centralized platform allows employees to submit their AI project proposals, facilitating transparency and efficient review.

Empowering Our Workforce: Training and Education

The success of any AI initiative hinges on the knowledge and skills of our workforce. To bridge the AI literacy gap, we partnered with Microsoft to deliver AI training sessions to interested employees. These sessions provided valuable insights into AI concepts, tools, and best practices.

Furthermore, in collaboration with our Training Division, we developed an in-house Ethical AI Use training program. This program emphasizes the importance of responsible AI deployment, addressing potential biases and ethical considerations.

Exploring the Frontier: Proofs of Concept (POCs)

To demonstrate the practical applications of AI, we conducted two significant Proofs of Concept (POCs).

  • Microsoft AI POC: We successfully deployed a private Large Language Model (LLM) and chatbots, showcasing the power of generative AI for internal applications. This POC provided valuable insights into the potential of AI to enhance efficiency and productivity.
  • Google AI POC: Similarly, we implemented a private LLM and chatbots using Google’s AI tools. This POC expanded our understanding of the diverse AI solutions available and their applicability to our agency’s needs.

Leading the Charge: Collaboration and Statewide Impact

Beyond internal initiatives, I have the honor of being a leader in the AI Council for ODOT. This council serves as a platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and strategic planning for AI adoption across the agency.

Furthermore, I was appointed to the State of Ohio’s AI subcommittee to evaluate agency use cases. This role allows me to contribute to the statewide effort to promote responsible and effective AI deployment in the public sector.

Reflecting on the Journey

This past year has been an incredible learning experience. I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative potential of AI and its ability to revolutionize how we work and serve our community. I’m immensely proud of the progress we’ve made in establishing a strong foundation for AI adoption at ODOT.

As I continue on my path for both roles in AI and Database Manager, I’m confident that the initiatives we’ve launched and will launch in the future will continue to drive innovation and empower our agency to harness the power of AI for the benefit of all.

Looking Ahead

The AI landscape is constantly evolving, and I’m excited to see how ODOT continues to leverage these technologies to enhance its services and operations. I believe that by fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and ethical AI use, we can unlock the full potential of AI to create a brighter future.
